Can an Italian Greyhound puppy be left alone in a crate for 7 hours?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Italian Greyhound | Male | unneutered | 2 lbs

I'm thinking of getting a Italian greyhound puppy and am wondering if they could be left alone for roughly 7 hrs. I have read online that they can't but I have had some rescue groups say yes. There would be cats and tv on. He would be in a crate but there would be some activity in the house but is 7 hrs too long or would he be fine. He is also litter box trained and the he would be able to use it while crated.

It depends on the the age of the puppy as to how long Winston can be left alone. If he is a young puppy under 6 months of age, he shouldn't be left alone for more than 3 hours at at time even though he's litter box trained. If he is over 6 months of age but younger than a year, I wouldn't leave him alone for more than 5-6 hours. Over a year, he can left alone for a max of 8 hours.
