My nursing dog is gassy, thirsty, and needy. Is her food the problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 2 years old | 60 lbs

My pitbull just had her first litter, 10 pups, 2 weeks ago. She is drinking water very excessively, has excessive gas, is acting very needy (constantly coming up to us and acting like she wants something even waking us up all night and trying to tell us something) she does take good care of the pups but does not act like she wants to feed them too much. She is eating purina puppy chow. Should I find a better brand of puppy food do those symptoms mean anything? Or am I a paranoid mommy?

Because Karma is on a new food, that could be the cause of her gas. Purina is not the best brand of food, but it is one of the better supermarket brands. You can give her a better brand of puppy food such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. She should be drinking more water to support nursing her puppies, and it's good that she is taking care of them. Because they are two weeks old, the puppies will start to feed less often, but they still need her frequently. She may want love and attention at this time, but it's always good to have any postpartum mother checked out by a vet for a health check. I would take Karma and her puppies into the vet tomorrow to make sure everything is going ok with them :-)
