My large cat is overweight. Can feeding less than the chart hurt him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old

Hi! I have always fed my larger kitty less than a half a cup of his dry food a day. Then when looking at the chart again it says at minimum 1/2 a cup. I'm wondering could him getting less calories hurt him in any way? He is a pretty big kitty (very tall and long) and weighs about 13 pounds he used to weigh about 10-11 so I reduced his food slightly. Should I go back to feeding him 1/2 cup to 5/8 a cup daily as the feeding chart reccomends? Thanks!

Hi! Feeding charts on bags of food provide a general estimate for how much an average active adult cat at an ideal body weight should eat. These charts are by no means set in stone! Individual animals' metabolisms can vary widely, just as they do in people. Since Roronoa Zoro is a bit overweight, you are doing the right thing by feeding him a bit less to achieve some weight loss. At this point, I would not make any adjustments simply based upon the feeding guide alone. There are calculations that can determine the number of calories per day that Roronoa Zoro should consume based upon his ideal body weight, body condition score, and overall activity level. Feel free to request a consultation if you would like to discuss this in more detail.
