Why does my cat have watery eyes with black crusty discharge?

Cat has been having watery-like eyes that dry into a crusty black consistency that ive had to physically wipe away from his eye. Wondering what this is and if cause for concern. Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 8 months old | 20 lbs
