Cat's skin red, bumpy, losing hair after fleas. Can Benadryl help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 6.2 lbs

My cat got fleas a few months ago and has been treated but her skin has been red, bumpy, and irritated ever since with some patches losing hair. I had read that coconut oil could help it so I put a little bit on last week and in some spots it seems to have helped a little, but she's still scratching a lot and losing small chunks of hair. One vet I spoke with said I could break a Benadryl in half and give it to her, but I haven't tried it yet because I want more info on it. What should I do?

Unfortunately, coconut oil really doesn't help at all, and cats typically just lick it off away. Cats can develop flea allergies as a result of a severe infestation of fleas, and that could be causing Charlie's continuing skin problems. Make sure to give him his flea treatments monthly and disinfect the environment. Yes you can give Benadryl to cats with allergies, but I would only give it if your vet prescribed it. They will know if it's safe to give Charlie or not. You may want to have him seen by a vet though. Flea allergies can be treated with medications such as steroids, and you can speak to the vet to see if that's an option for him. If it is, the vet can prescribe them for him.
