My mother-in-law's aggressive dog bit my toddler. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 5 lbs

My mother in law has a dog that stays with us. I have a 17 month old son. The dog is a bit aggressive, always growling and nipping at my son. I've tried to separate them and teach my son not to go near the dog but he's one, he doesn't understand. My mother in law doesn't want to do anything about it. Today, Marley (the dog) bit my son. He didn't break the skin, but there is an impressive indent and it's red. What should I do about it? Do I report it? The dog is literally with us all of the time.

I am very concerned that Marley has bitten your son, and if he is aggressive to him, he could seriously hurt him one day soon. This dog should not be anywhere near your son, his safety should come first. Marley should be removed from your house immediately, and I would tell your MIL that he needs to go now. If she isn't willing to do anything about it, then yes I would report it. I think you should at least give your MIL a chance to do something about it, but if she doesn't take that chance, you need to protect your son.
