My Jack Russell's cloudy eye, discharge, and limping: emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 11 years and 7 months old | 20 lbs

My Jack Russell's eyes have been cloudy on and off for a long time now. I came home today and one of them is completely clouded over, she is excessively winking that eye. There was a little bit of yellow discharge coming from it. My mom says we don't need to take her to the vet, I am trying to convince her different. She is also limping a bit. She is getting old and I'm getting very nervous. I'm not sure what to do. Is there anything that may be able to help provide her relief until then?

I agree with you that Missy needs to see a vet. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Missy's cloudy eyes could be due to cataracts, nuclear sclerosis, or glaucoma. The complete clouding over and the discharge may be due to an eye infection. As for the limping, this could be due to arthritis or an injury. Unfortunately there is nothing you can give her at home. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Missy really has to see a vet as soon as possible. I would let your mother know that you spoke with a veterinarian online who advised you that an immediate vet visit is definitely needed for Missy.
