Dog pooping black, tarry, and bright red blood. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 30 days old | 55 lbs

Took dog to the vet again, for blood in vomit, they think its mild IBS, he got a finger up his butt and his temperature taken. everything seems normal. we go home he eats, we go outside he poops blood. He poops, black and tarry, but also theres bright red blood mixed in there too! I called and she said to come pick up some medication for him tomorrow. honestly what is going on? Is this not a emergency, what if he continues to poop like this? I'm just losing my mind over here.

I understand your concern. Seeing fresh blood can be common when the colon is inflamed, but black or tar-like stools can indicate bleeding in the small intestines or stomach. This is more serious for sure. It can be an emergency if there is on-going bleeding. The best choice would be to have Spock evaluated ASAP to ensure there is no crisis about to occur. Also, starting the appropriate medications tonight would be really helpful to prevent further issues. It is never wrong to get a second opinion, particularly when you are worried. You know your pet best. If there are not general practices available at this time, then take Spock to the nearest emergency veterinary clinic. Good lck!
