Why is my puppy's diarrhea returning after hookworm treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 8 week old puppy tested positive for hookworm on April 5th at the vet, was treated there with a milky substance and given heartworm (flea, hookworm and heartworm in one) on April 6th. (not due for round 2 of heartworm until May 6 I was told) April 13th he started having diarrhea. Called the vet on Monday the 17th, they suggested rice and cottage with his food. His poop hardened yesterday, and the beginning of today, however, seems like it turned back to squirts end of BM. Is this normal?

Yes, as the diarrhea is clearing up you can still see bouts of diarrhea at the end of the bowel movement. I would keep adding the rice and cottage in his food for the next 48-72 hours, then slowly take it away until he is eating his normal diet only.
