My puppy has watery, sore eyes. Can I give him human antihistamines?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Male | neutered | 5 months and 16 days old | 7.4 lbs

my 24 week pup lhasa apso has had some sore eye for about 5 days but i took him to the vet and vet just said it was his hair in his eye but now both eyes are watery and hes still yelping and rubbing his one eye usally at night or after hes woke up he keeps blinking his eye through out the day i was told to try a antihistamine for it because if it is a irrtason or a allergic reaction to anything that would help and said human antihistamines are fine for him is that true

Place an e-collar cone on him to prevent rubbing or pawing at the eyes. Consider a recheck with your veterinarian or a veterinary opthalmologist to diagnose eye infection or injury. Certain OTC antihistamines can be used but only under the direction and guidance of your veterinarian.

At best, you can use a warm washcloth to keep the eye clear of discharge and place an e-collar on him to prevent pawing or rubbing. There are no OTC medications you can use and treatment would not be recommended without a diagnosis. If you can't get in to see your veterinarian, consider a visit to the local veterinary ER. It may cost more, but potential eye infections or injuries should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.
