Why is my young calf lethargic with bloody diarrhea and a cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Other | Unknown - Other | Male | unneutered | 110 lbs

We have 2, 9 day old dairy calves. One is very spunky, eats 2L of milk replacement twice a day, normal stool. The other was eating 1L twice a day, then tonight only 1/3 of a litre. Very calm, lays down most times, and has runny stool with blood that he's taking two neosulf plus daily for. Also has developed a cough after eating. Temperatures outside have dropped the last two days but they are in an enclosed shelter with lots of hay. Does not have mucous nose, concerned about pneumonia

Your calf may have coccidiosis, which is pretty common in bottle-fed dairy calves, especially those who've not received adequate colostrum upon calving. I'd recommend at least taking a fecal sample in to your local vet for analysis and treatment, as the antibiotics you've had him on may not be effective. Pneumonia is definitely a concern in these calves as well.
