Why did my dog swell and die after a larger dog grabbed his neck?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 4 years and 5 months old | 9 lbs

My best buddy passed away last night. Rocky was grabbed by a larger dog at the back of neck around 7pm. Checked skin, no punctures or bleeding. He seemed fine....at 9pm he started swelling around face and neck. Headed out door for emergency room. ...continued to swell, started to choke. Pulled over, mouth to snout, cpr.....gone in minutes. Any idea what went wrong? Devastated!

Usually, when a large doge grabs a small dog by the neck, he will shake the dog. This could damage the spinal cord, tear tissue and break blood vessels underneath the skin which will cause swelling and even bleeding to death without showing blood on the outside.. This could indeed be lethal. I am so sorry you lost your best friend.
