My 9-week-old kitten has diarrhea with blood and mucus. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have an 9 week old kitten who has developed diarrhoea over the past 10hrs, and his last trip to the litter box I have noticed that there is a tiny bit of bright red blood as well as a bit of mucous in his poo. Should I be worried? Can I wait till the morning?

Small specks of red blood during a bout of diarrhea is not unusual as the delicate lining of the back passage can become damaged from straining. As long as he is bright and alert, eating and drinking it would be ok to leave him but if any lethargy, weakness or vomiting occurs he should be seen urgently by your vet. Be sure he is up to date with deworming medication as intestinal worms are a common cause of diarrhea in young kittens

Poor boy! Since he is so small, I would have your vet take a look at him and check a fecal on him for intestinal parasites, giardia, and abnormal bacteria that could cause the stool to be loose and bloody. Your vet will also be able to assess his hydration level to ensure he doesn't need any fluids. I would also watch him closely to ensure he is eating normally and still active like a kitten. I hope this helps!
