My cat was spayed. Is Previcox safe for her post-op pain relief?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Van | Female | unspayed | 8.8 lbs

My cat was spayed today and the doctor prescribed Previcox (firocoxib) 57 mg. I was checking the drug online, and i found out that it should not be given to cats and it might be fatal. I contacted my vet, but he said that he had prescribed this medication for cats before and it gave amazing results. I'd like to have a second professional opinion.

According to Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, while Previcox may ultimately be shown to be safe for use in cats, supporting information or FDA approval is not currently available for it to be recommended. I don't like to disagree or contradict a vet's recommendations, but because there isn't supporting evidence that it's safe to be used in cats, another pain medication may be better to use on Haley. I would speak to your vet about getting another pain medication prescribed for her.
