My senior lab has cancer & low platelets. What should I watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 11 years and 4 months old | 85 lbs

my 11 yr female lab has sac adenocarcinoma and can't have surgery because of low red platelets. What should I watch for and is the fear of a bleed more than cancer? also has large tumor on her shoulder that can't be removed. On tramadol and rimydal.

The low platelets may be secondary to her cancer. This is referred to as a paraneoplastic syndrome. You should monitor for decreased appetite, lethargy and difficulty defecating especially if sublimbar lymph nodes are enlarged. Hypercalcemia is a common problem associated with anal sac tumors. Bleeding is not likely but ultimately depends on platelet count. I would advise you to consult with a veterinary oncologist to discuss all of your options.
