My cat has a cheek lump after vet visit. Is the vet's advice right?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 8 years and 3 months old

Did the vet do the right thing? Last 2-3 weeks my 8-yr-old male cat has been scratching around his neck to the point of the long hairs around the collar of his neck have become short. A week ago his face looked lopsided and a hard, egg-shaped, moveable, painless lump on his cheek was discovered with a tiny scab over top of lump. The vet did a FNA and withdrew "old" blood, didn't look under microscope, gave him Convenia shot. Sent home to see if lump goes down. He acts normal. Should I worry?

It could be that Trouble has an abscess from scratching his neck causing the lump. Abscesses are pockets of infection which should be treated with antibiotics, so it is possible that the vet did the right thing if they suspected an abscess. It's good that Trouble is acting normally, and I wouldn't worry just yet. Keep an eye on the lump and if it doesn't go down, then I would have him seen by a vet again.
