My senior cat has a lump under her skin that popped. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 17 lbs

17 yr old FS DSH, obese. She has a blueberry sized lump by her right front shoulder blade close to her neck. It is under the skin. I was feeling it to see if it was hard or soft and it just popped - easily. Whoops! She did not meow or seem like she felt anything. The contents must be under the skin. No tick or infection visible. Very healthy otherwise, just had a dental last week.

Whoops is right! It could be that Bailey has a cyst and it opened up internally. I would keep an eye on the area for now, and if the lump starts to appear again, I would have her seen by a vet. If it is a cyst, they can reoccur and it may need to be removed surgically to prevent it from filling back up.
