My vet suggested annual and quarterly dog injections. Are they safe?

I am not quite sure whom you are addressing this to. Usually you are the person who decides when and where you take your dog to a vet and whether you want her to be vaccinated (you should!). Maybe you can clarify and we can help then.

I suspect the answer is yes. Vaccine protocols do vary based upon vaccine type, prevalence of disease in the area and previous history. I recommend to discuss your concerns with the doctor. This will depend on the type of vaccines used. Usually your dog will need a once yearly rabies vaccination, and a once yearly DAPP2 vaccination. Depending on where you live and whether he has access to water puddles, ponds, etc, he will also need a once yearly Leptospirosis Vaccination. Consult with your pet doctor, he will recommend what is needed in your area.

This can be a somewhat complicated question as it depends on how many vaccines he is getting at once, which vaccines he is getting and also how cautious the owner and the veterinarian are. Vaccine reactions in general are rare but small breed dogs are more likely to have them than a large breed dog. There are also many different vaccines. Some dogs only get 3 vaccines and some get as many as 5 or 6 depending on where they live and individual life style factors. If there are more than 3 vaccines due at once or if there is a concern for a reaction, I recommend to split vaccines up so not so many are being given at once. Pets can also get diphenhydramine prior to vaccines which can help to further decrease vaccine reactions. That being said, there are many small breed dogs who get more than 3 vaccines at a time and no diphenhydramine and the majority of them still do fine. For small dogs, I generally do recommend to separate vaccines by a few weeks. This will decrease the chances of a vaccine reaction. You can also give the pups diphenhydramine prior to the vaccines to further decrease reaction rates. Definitely discuss these options with your veterinarian. Possible side effects of vaccines are vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling, lethargy and collapse. If your pups exhibit any of these afterwards, be sure to have them seen immediately. The vast majority of pets are fine with vaccines however and reactions are rare. Most vets vaccinate based up risks associated with life style and the diseases found in your area. I recommend to have a conversation about risk factors for your pups but I suspect they are present if your vet is recommending these vaccines. Clear communication however is always best. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is a rather hot topic right now and you will find many opinions, but here are my thoughts. Rabies are every 3 years in almost all states. Bordatella (kennel cough) does need to be boostered at least every year but every 6 months may be recommended for dogs who board/groom/dog park frequently. Distemper/parvo vaccines are really where the debate is at. The AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) Canine Vaccination Guidelines are the standard for many hospitals. It states that this should be boostered 1 year after the puppy series, and then “every 3 years or longer”. That being said, we have seen a case or two of adult or older animals getting parvo somewhere in that 3 year time frame which suggests that some animals may need more frequent boostering. Thus, my clinic still recommends yearly boosters for most patients. I personally have decided to compromise and recommend yearly boosters until age 5, then every 3 years thereafter. Hope t

We are seeing an increase in incidences of pain at the injection site and some localized swelling. Mostly this is seen in smaller to medium sized breeds and it is usually treated with anti-inflammatory medications through your vet. However I would probably air on the side of caution and just recommend oral Benadryl before and up to 2 days after vaccines are given to combat any such problems with your fur babies. Best wishes!

Hello. So sorry to hear that Jimin had this problem. I don't know what antibiotic they are injecting so it is hard for me to say if it is too much. If you would like to post again with the name of the drug we could maybe help you better. If Jimin is acting well and the incision with the stitches seems to be healing ok then you might be alright to stop the injections. Again, it is difficult for me to make that determination as I am not sure what he has been given. Good questions. After your vet examines your pet and deems them healthy for vaccines, then its ok to proceed. There is no way to predict if a pet is going to have a reaction, and the fact that the pet never had vaccines before does not increase their chances of having a reaction. The best thing to do is to monitor Princess accordingly for 24 hrs after her vaccines for signs of a reaction, which include: vomiting, diarrhea and facial swelling. A heart murmur is detected with a stethoscope used by your veterinarian in certain locations on the chest. I am unsure of what was going on with the other pet that received vaccines. However if it took several months for the pet to perish, then this certainly was not caused by the vaccinations and likely was an unrelated underlying condition. Vaccine complications occur within 1-7 days at the most, if they are going to occur.
