My 7-month-old cat walks weird, butt up. Is she in heat or hurt?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

Yammy is 7months. Today she's been around my puppy a lot more then normal and tons of little kids. She just started walking weird with her butt up in the air or just standing there like that. She seems uneasy. Should we be concerned that she got hurt? She is able to walk and go up and down steps. Could she be in heat?

Yes, it is certainly possible that Yammy is in heat. She's the right age to go into heat for the first time, and the behavior she is showing can indicate being in heat as well. Presenting her bottom in the air is an indication she is willing to be mated. If you do not want kittens, I would keep her indoors and away from any intact males. Her heat should last from one to two weeks, after which I'd recommend getting her spayed. I hope this helps!

From your description and the fact that Nimbus is not spayed, I'm guessing that she is probably in heat :) During their heat cycle, female cats typically hold their rear end up in the air and may also roll around on the floor and meow constantly. I would recommend having her spayed as soon as you are able to - it will stop this behavior, and also keep her from developing health problems like mammary cancer and pyometra (a severe uterine infection) when she's older.
