My cat has a deep, swollen, painful armpit wound. Does it need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 4 months old | 18 lbs

I just noticed that my cat has an open wound close to his front right armpit. It looks like it's deep. It feels swollen around the wound and it is sensitive when I touch it. Pics available.

Oh no, poor Fred! This wound will need to be cleaned and if it's deep, it will need sutures to close it. He needs to see a vet immediately for this. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
