My puppy scratched his neck abscess. What should I do to heal it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 7 days old

My puppy scratched open his abcess on his neck the wound is big we wash him with disinfectants everyday but he wont allow us to touch or apply any antiseptic or wound spray. The vets here are very expensive. How long will the wound take to heal... He eats, drinks, poops but he keeps on scratching. Should we bandage the wound or let it dry out, im just afraid it might get infected as the skin is busy deteriorating and getting hard

An abscess is an infection and Shadow really does need to see a vet for antibiotics. It's also concerning that you describe the wound as big. The tissue could become necrotic without proper treatment, and he should see a vet. If money is an issues, I would see if your vet will accept payment plans or if there is a low cost clinic in your area. Truly, however, Shadow has to see a vet for this as soon as possible.
