Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 6 months old
Hello Doctor, My dog developed something like a boil above her eyes last week, the next day it became swollen and red after that the redness cleared a bit but boil is growing bigger, the funny part is that it doesn't really have the rounded shape of a boil but rather thinner and, longer and flatter, I am afraid of the fact that it might actually be an insect that has its face inside the skin while its body is outside cos it doesn't really look like a part of my dogs skin. Thank you.

This boil could be a cyst on Daisy's face, and she will need to see a vet for it. If it is a cyst, it will need to be drained sterilely and it may need to be surgically removed to prevent it from reoccurring. Please do not try to drain it yourself as you will introduce infection into the area. I would have Daisy seen by a vet tomorrow if possible for this.

This looks like an infected eye lid cyst. It should heal and get smaller in a week or two. If not then bring him in for an exam and topical medication to treat this. Many dogs get eyelid cysts and benign tumors. As long as they are not causing eye irritation they can be left alone. If they get large and bother the dog then I recommend surgical removal. There is no reason that I know of why some dogs get these and others don’t. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Sawyer.

I doubt this is a cyst. I would be very worried it is a cancer. I can't believe a veterinary ophthalmologist (specialist) said they have no clue. Didn't anyone recommend removing it and sending it for a histopathology? That is what I would do. It may not be bothering him currently but it may continue to grow and cause problems or if it is a cancer the longer it is there the better chance it has to spread. I would have it removed.

If you are referring to the red raised area on the edge of her eye lid this is an infected eyelid cyst. Usually these do not cause problems and often go away without treatment. If it gets larger or starts to cause irritation to the eyeball resulting in eye discharge then a veterinary exam is indicated. They may treat it with ophthalmic antibiotic ointment. Sometimes these raised areas are benign masses that are surgically removed if they enlarge. Right now I would just keep watch of this and take her in if you see it enlarging or causing discomfort.
