Why are there maggots in my puppy's poop after I left it outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 months and 23 days old | 30 lbs

My puppy has been pooping normally nothing in it that shouldn't be. But when he went poop a couple days ago I had left it out, flies were around his poop and today when I finally cleaned it up I found baby maggots in it. He was dewormed last month and when I take him outside I make sure he doesn't eat anything he shouldn't. Could he cause of his be because I left the poop out for so long?

It's because you left the poop out for so long before picking it up. Flies will place their eggs in the poop so that when the maggots hatch, they have a food source. I had nothing to do with Rocco :-)
