Why is my dog having diarrhea, pooping inside, and eating his poop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Belgian Malinois | Male | neutered | 63 lbs

My one and a half year-old Belgian malinois has been pooping excessively for several days. The poop is sometimes solid and most of the time soft almost diarrhea like. We are having lots of issues with him pooping in the house he is otherwise potty trained but I think the sense of urgency happens and he just goes. He does not give us any warning I think because he doesn't have warning himself. He is then upset because he doesn't mean to do this. If not caught in time he does eat the feces. Help!

Poor Fritz sounds like he is suffering from diarrhea, and that would cause him to have to go wherever he is urgently. Whenever a dog has diarrhea for longer than 24 hours, a vet visit is recommended. He could be suffering from intestinal worms, a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, or could have a foreign body. The vet can diagnose what is causing his diarrhea and can treat him for it. I would take him into a vet today.

Fritz may be suffering from colitis which often shows an urgent need to "go". He could also be suffering from inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal parasites causing the bowel to be overactive. This needs to be examined and treated. Please take Fritz to a veterinarian today, if possible or an emergency room. The vet will want to do blood tests and possibly x-rays and will prescribe medication according to his findings which will relieve Fritz's urge and irritation. If possible do not let him eat his feces. If you can, bring a fresh stool sample with you to the vet.
