My senior dog has terrible diarrhea and won't eat. Are her meds causing it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shetland Sheepdog | Female | spayed | 10 years and 8 months old | 28 lbs

My sheltie is 11 years old and taking hydrocan for a collapsing trachea. She has been taking this for approx 2 months with no problem, but suddenly she has had terrible smelling yellow diarrhea for the past 3 days. Should I stop her meds? She is not eating. Thank you.

No, do not stop Shelby's meds without speaking to her vet first. This diarrhea could be caused by a GI illness not her medication, and the vet might want to see her to give her medications to help with the diarrhea. Given that she has been having diarrhea for three days and isn't eating, she needs to see a vet today. Give your vet a call and bring her in to see the vet.
