My young King Charles has kidney failure. What's her life expectancy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 6 years and 9 months old | 17 lbs

Morning, I'm awaiting blood test results from my vets regarding my 5year old king Charles kidney failure. Following the ultra sound her kidneys are 1.3cm and 3.5cm. All the levels tested in urine are extremely high. She is lethargic and drinking 2 bowls of water a day. I've been looking online for life expectancy due to her age not much is documented. She also has syringomiella too which is medicated. She's currently on fortekor for kidney treatment.

Poor Molly. Unfortunately without the full set of results it is very difficult to assess her condition and until the results are in it is impossible to predict the course of her illness. Kidney failure at such a young age is always a concern but some acute kidney injuries can undergo some degree of recovery of kidney function. It can be very helpful in patients with such complicated medical conditions to discuss lifestyle goals and warning flags which indicate her overall quality of life and if reached require reassessment of her management (eg - night wetting of bed/house, time spent playing with family members vs time spent sleeping/retiring to bed, voluntary food intake and maintaining body weight)
