My dog bit me after I smacked her. Why is she acting aggressive?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 21 years and 2 months old | 35 lbs

I just got home and my dog started peeing, I did give her a smack a couple times on the nose and then she bit me, she bit me in the face. She's been acting more and more aggressive towards me after I moved states 2 months ago. I've always punished her the same way, the way I did earlier today, but just now she's bit me. Why would she do this? She has always been so attached to me, loving me because the previous home she was at didn't give her much attention, but now she seems different

It's likely because you are being aggressive with her by smacking her on the nose, and she is reacting back with aggression. It's never recommended to punish a dog with aggression as they can and will retaliate with aggression towards you. This is something you need to stop doing now, as it only teaches her to be afraid of you, and when dogs are scared, they can be aggressive. She will need training from a professional behavioral expert to deal with her increasingly aggressive behaviors. This is a behavior that has to be stopped now before it gets worse, and a professional will be the best person to work with on it. I would speak to your vet about a referral to a professional behavioral expert. In the future if she misbehaves, put her in time out. The behavioral expert can discuss with you other ways to handle her poor behavior in a humane manner.
