My senior dog has a lipoma. Can it be treated without surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 14 years and 11 months old | 72 lbs

My 15yo labrador has an external lipoma on his leg - about the size of a brazil nut. It has been checked regularly by a vet. Is there any way this can be treated apart from surgery?

No, surgery is the only way to remove Jack's lipoma. If your vet has already aspirated the mass to examine the cells under the microscope and finds that it has not been growing dramatically, monitoring at home can be quite reasonable for many lipomas. If the lipoma begins growing quickly, bleeds, or seems to limit Jack's movement, surgery would likely be beneficial.
