Can my Great Dane walk 10-15 miles daily for an endurance trip?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | 1 year and 7 months old | 169 lbs

I have a 2 1/2 year old healthy Great Dane. I want to walk across America. I understand he will hold me back as far as pace. I need to go 70-100/week with one regular rest day/week. He will never have to carry a load. I will have a couple of hard rules: 1) Never walking over 85 degrees. 2) No walking in rain below 50 degrees. The plan will be to rest every 3-4 days and taking regular water/rest breaks during each walk day to break up the mile/day. Can he do this(10-15 miles/day)? Any thoughts?

There is no way of knowing for sure but as long as he has no history or any joint issues such as underlying hip dysplasia he may be capable. You should be prepared to have an emergency plan that he can be collected and minded should he develop any signs of lameness, discomfort or foot problems.
