My cat is grieving a lost family member. How can I help him cope?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old

Is it normal for my cat to grieve the loss of my spouse? He appears to still watch the door for him regularly at the time he would come home from work and meows plaintively if the bathroom door is shut (light on but no one in there). It has been four months. Is there anything I can do to help Mineau?

I'm very sorry for your loss. Mineau could absolutely be grieving for your spouse. If possible, try to find one of your husband's old shirts, hats, or something that may have his scent and place this item near his bed. You could also try a calming pheromone collar or diffuser (Feliway is one example). I hope this helps.
