My partner is allergic to my cat. How can we reduce her symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 7.6 lbs

I'm moving in with my girlfriend soon, but she's allergic to cats. There's no way I'm getting rid of my cat, Fae, but I was wondering if there was a special pill or sonething other than over the counter benedryl my girlfriend could take to make her allergies not pop up, or at least lessen.

Your girlfriend could consider consulting an allergist to discuss allergy testing and desensitization injections (allergy shots). I'm not a human physician, so I am not aware of any other OTC meds that could help her. Consider bathing Fae occasionally, brushing her regularly, and washing her bedding regularly to try to decrease the amount of dander she leaves in the environment.
