My rabbit is grieving her friend. How long will she grieve and when can I get a new one?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 8 months old

My rabbit's very good friend has passed away. I took him to the vet. He had some sickness and was very weak. I came back home without him. I don't think my rabbit understands that he is gone. It is nearly a month now from when he went and she is still very angry. She keeps on digging, even when I am holding her in my lap. When will she stop grieving? How long will it take for her to calm down? How can I tell her that McBunny is gone? When is it an appropriate time to get a new friend for her?

If Donut is not content on her own then now would be an appropriate time to consider introducing another rabbit for company. Unneutered females can be aggressive however and it can require some time and patience to introduce a new pair and neutering Donut may be worthwhile considering to ease such transition if you are not breeding her
