Why is my dog not eating his food, only treats, and sleeping a lot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 56 lbs

My dog used to eat so much when he was younger and growing. Now he just eats whenever. We've started to leave his food out because he won't eat and meal time for days and we don't want to starve him. If we put coconut oil and peanut butter on his food he barely touches it. But he'll eat peanut butter and coconut oil alone. Does he just hate his food? He also could sleep all day. He still gets excited when we hike, when we get home, etc. Do I just have a lazy dog or should I be concerned?

Considering your description, I think there is nothing wrong with him and you could try to change his food (you may try with chicken and rice for a week time for example). Coconut oil or peanut butter are very fat and, although increase palatability, they can result in some sporadic diarrhoea episodes.
