Why is my dog's vulva swollen with no blood? Is she in heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 13 days old | 5 lbs

My 8 month chihuahua has gone off her food. She is acting playful and very happy. Her vulva has swollen although I do not see any blood, this has been like this for 2.5 weeks. Is this her in heat? Do dogs always bleed? I have seen a clear distorted but that has stopped now. She cleans herself very well.

Yes, it is possible that Peanut is in heat for the first time, as dogs may not always have obvious bleeding during heat. If she cleans herself very well, she may be licking up any bloody discharge. To be safe, I would keep her away from any intact dogs, and do not allow her out into the yard unsupervised. It's never recommend to breed a dog on their first heat, as she will not be mature enough physically and emotionally to raise puppies.
