My senior dog has liver & heart failure. What's her prognosis now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 8 years and 8 months old | 28 lbs

My 9 year old overweight dauchund has stage 2 liver cirrhosis as well as heart failure. She is taking medication for both. She keeps vomiting despite nausea medication. She has fits, especially at night. Can she overcome this or is it going to keep getting worse?

The fits at night are likely syncopes, caused by the congestive heart failure. This means she has lots of fluid in her lungs and her heart is not efficient enough to pump enough oxygenated blood to her brain which in turn makes her have these "fits". Another reason could be that the liver is not effective enough detoxifying the body and therefore your dog has seizures. The vomiting is likely related to the liver failure. Neither liver cirrhosis nor heart failure can be cured, I am afraid. Medication will provide some time, that is slow down progress of the diseases, but eventually Kara will succumb. Work with your veterinarian to give her a good quality of life for as long as possible, but prepare for the day on which you will give her the gift of a painless passing.
