Why did my dog lose vision after liver shunt surgery? Will it return?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 3 lbs

My dog was diagnosed with a liver shunt extra hepatic. We had the surgery and for the first day everything was fine, Now my dog has lost all vision. I cant find any information on if this will come back once the liver has started to work and starts dispersing the ammonia when the band closes on the shunt. The vets office that performed the surgery will not contact me back. She went in for a week into the ICU and I just got her back yesterday.

If Lulu appears to be going blind, has cloudy eyes or is having trouble getting around/acting dazed or confused it is best to alert your vet immediately or seek care of another veterinarian. it's possible the issue could be related to the liver surgery, however it is an odd complication and should be checked out by a vet immediately.
