My dog has a yellow, crusty, itchy wound with hair loss. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 71 lbs

Good day, My dog has a yellow open type wound, where you can clearly see yellow crust, with redness underneath and some puss in between. It's quite hard and big and she is experiencing hair loss on that area. The hair around the area is stiff and there is a black residue around the roots. When we touch the area, she scratches it profusely. Thank you in advance.

This sounds like a hotspot which may require antibiotics and also antiinflammatory/pain medication to reduce the scratchinh as prescribed by your vet. Be sure to keep the wound clean and bathe 2-3times daily with dilute chlorhexidine or saline in order to reduce the infection.
