My dog yelps when picked up and is lethargic. Is it a pulled muscle?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 12 lbs

My dog was fine this morning, active, wet nose. She has eaten today and tonight. She was a little lethargic tonight but usually is chilled of a night. When I tried to pick her up she yelped. I have felt all her belly and legs and she doesn't yelp then only if you pick her up. Do you think she has pulled a muscle?

Oh no, poor Pippin! Yes, it is possible that she could have pulled a muscle if she is a little lethargic and yelped when you try to pick her up. I would watch her for the next 24-48 hours. If she still appears painful and lethargic over this time, then I would have her seen by a vet for a health check. Should she develop other signs such as anorexia, vomiting, or diarrhea, then I would have her seen by a vet right away.
