My dog has a dry nose. What can I use that he won't lick or rub off?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shorthaired Pointer (duplicate) | Male | neutered

My Pointer has always had a very dry external nose 'skin'. The last few weeks, it has gotten even dryer. It doesn't seem to bother him, but is there an over the counter salve or ointment that I could apply that he won't feel duty bound to remove immediately by rubbing onto anything in sight?

You could try using a small amount of Vaseline or Bag Balm on this area to help with the dryness - some dogs will try to rub off any topical medications that might be applied, unfortunately, so I can't say if he will leave these alone or not. Normally, using only a small amount is best, so that it doesn't feel sticky and strange to the dog :)
