My dog has an anal sac lump with discharge. What could it be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed | 13 years and 3 months old

My 12 yr. Poodle has a nodule next to her left anal sac. Been there for 2 months, always had a thicker discharge when expressed. She recently took a week of primor 240mg, no change then it drained clear and pink bloody fluid. Back on clavamox 65mg 3xday + rimadyl for a week no change. Vet done needle aspiration in the duct and one in the nodule, seen a few cells in the duct several in the nodule doesn't think it's cancer. Sending me to a teaching hospital. Just would like your thoughts

I'm sorry Meagan has a nodule next to her anal sac! It could still be a malignant tumor, as some types of cancer do not show up on a fine needle aspirate, but it could also be a benign tumor. Having her seen by at the teaching hospital is a good idea, as a biopsy of the nodule would be the next logical step. Good luck, I hope this helps!
