Why is my dog's diabetes uncontrolled despite insulin treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 6 year old min pin was diagnosed with DM last fall (when she was 5) after months of intense polydipsia/uria. She was started on 3u insulin BID and has since been increased to 4 as her blood sugars are still very high. She has lost a lot of weight, has a good appetite, still drinks&pees a lot (spills glucose), her sugars are in the 4-500s. She has some hair loss, not remarkably lethargic. PMH: overweight; hermaphrodite (vagina + undescended testicles), testicles were removed at a young age

Hello. If she is still drinking and peeing and having glucose in her pee then the diabetes isn't under control. Chat with your vet about checking for infections (urinalysis is recommended) as well as Cushing's disease. If these are present the diabetes won't become controlled. Hair loss is associated woth Cushings as well. Good luck with her!
