How to clean my dog's ears, what to use, and how often should I?

Hi so I have a question about ear cleaning. So the last time that I took him to petco to get a full bath including ear cleaning was probably in July or August. So now im not sure how to go about cleaning his ears. So toward the tip of his ear you can see like small spot of wax, should I just wipe that off ? Do I need a ear cleaning formula to clean his ears? How do I clean his ears ? How often should I clean his ears? Just please explain the process by which I should clean his ears. Thank You.
