My German Shepherd was bred. Is bleeding after mating normal for her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 3 months old

My 4 yr old german shepard was mated on the 9th of april and went into heat on the 1st. Two days after her vulva decreased in size and shes still bleeding/spotting. Shes not in pain at all and didnt yelp or whine when her sire entered her. We are trying to get her pregnant. Is this normal for her?

It sounds like you tried to mate Lez at the correct time in her cycle, and she won't necessarily stop bleeding just because she is pregnant. I would wait until at least April 22nd and then take her into the vet for a blood test. The vet can test for a hormone called relaxin which will indicate if she is pregnant or not.
