My dog is vomiting after eating Cesar dog food. Is it a food reaction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 11 months old | 17 lbs

hello my dog has been vomiting for the past two days. twice in one day and one the day before that. I did feed her Cesar the food brand for dogs and the color of her vomit resembles the color of the food a little bit. I don't know if she is having a bad reaction to it or having stomach problems. At the moment she is at her regular routine she eat seasonless plain chicken cut up and cooked and has not vomited this day.

I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. These signs are usually due to nausea and possible vomit may be noticed in the next hours. Gastrointestinal inflammation is possible and dietary indiscretion is by far the most common cause of it. Should you notice any vomiting, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 6 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled white fish and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

Hello, I know this has been frustrating for both of you. In some cases, the reason a pet vomits or has a poor appetite may be secondary to an underlying disease process such as inflammation in the intestines, pancreas, liver or kidneys. I would advise you to have Chewie examined by a veterinarian and discuss deworming, bloodwork and an abdominal ultrasound prior to another food change. If you do elect to change his diet, I would advise you to feed him a novel protein or hydrolysis protein diet such as Royal Canin duck and potato or venison and green pea. You can obtain an Rx from your veterinarian to buy food in a local pet store or possibly purchase directly from the veterinary hospital.
