My dog has a face scab. Should I worry or will it heal on its own?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 5 months old | 5 lbs

My 3.5 year old Yorkie has a sore on his face. A scab has formed over it that looked like tear stains. While bathing him, I realized it wasn't coming off when I washed his face. He's always been a healthy dog, has no known allergies, doesn't interact with other animals & is indoors except for bathroom trips. Should I be concerned about this sore or will his body take care of it on its own? Thanks!

Poor Mushu! Given that a scab has formed over this sore, it is healing and I would keep monitor it for now. Once the skin underneath is fully healed, the scab will fall off. I'd leave the scab alone and not rub at it. If you remove the scab, you will be disturbing the healing process and it will take longer to heal. Should the scab still be there in a few weeks, then I would be concerned and have Mushu seen by a vet.
