Why is my dog struggling with back legs, shivering, and has diarrhea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 30 lbs

My dog was laying down and randomly started whining so I called her to me and she stood up on her front legs but couldn't get up on her back so I picked her up and made her stand up to see if I could see anything wrong. She can walk but she is walking very weird with her back legs almost like she can barely get them to work. She can get her front paws up a step but can't even lift her back legs to try. She also has very bad diarrhea. And I have her laying down now and she is shivering on and off

This sounds like a medical emergency and you should have Puddin seen right away. The potential cause for her signs are a slipped disc in her back causing pinching of her nerves going to her back legs (Intervertebral disc disease), trauma, spinal infection, a spinal tumor or a toxin. The veterinarian will want to perform a through exam and localize the pain. They will also check Puddin's neurologic function which will help to determine if her signs are due to a spinal problem. If her signs worsen and she can no longer walk on her back legs, she may need an MRI or surgery. Please have her seen, good luck.
