Is my dog having seizures or just dreaming when twitching in sleep?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Catahoula Leopard Dog | Female | spayed | 4 months and 17 days old | 20 lbs

When my dog sleeps she stars twitching and breathing hard. I try to wake her up from because I only think she is having a bad dream but she just stops moving completely and her eyes roll backwards. Is this signs of seizures or any other condition or is it simply just bad dreams?

It is hard to say if this is a seizure. However it is more likely that Tally is dreaming while in deep sleep, and when you try to wake her up, she actually does not, or only wakes up halfway and then goes back to sleep. This often happens in young dogs, especially when they feel very safe and sleep hard. I do not think the dreams are bad dreams, they just may be very exciting. If you are very worried, take a little video of the twitching and when you try to wake her up, and show it to your vet for an assessment.
