Why does my Lab have skin bumps, flaky skin, hair loss, and red fur?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 106 lbs

I have a chocolate lab and on his lower back has developed several areas where a hard bump covered by white flaky skin with thinning hair around each area. His hair has become a relish color on top of his back from shoulders to hips and same reddish color spots of hair on legs. Has large bald area on top of his tail with white flaky skin. What could this be?

Boomer's coat changes could be related to underlying endocrine/metabolic disorders (hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease), allergies, seborrhea, among others. Watch closely to determine if you have noticed any changes in Boomer's water consumption, urine frequency and volume, appetite and energy level. Any of these changes can help your vet determine if he has an underlying condition. Boomer should see his vet for an exam and possible blood and skin testing to determine the cause of his changes so that appropriate treatment can be started.
