Can dogs fully digest added vegetables and fruit? Should I feed them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 4 years and 9 months old | 17 lbs

Are dogs able to fully digest steamed vegetables or do they need them puréed as well? Does the fruit need to be steamed as well? I've fed cooked peas before and I would see them in her stool. I've reduced her dog food by about 10% to account for the produce. The dog food I'm feeding does have produce in it already so should I just feed more dog food instead? Her supplements are also 5% of her diet. So that's 15% total of extras which I read is the highest it should be. Is 10% more balanced?

If you feed a high quality complete dog food for medium sized dogs, you do not need to supplement her food as it has everything your dog needs. You do not need to purree steamed vegetables. Dogs do not need extra veggies or fruit when they have a good quality complete food. They will digest what the body can use, and eliminate extra fiber and whatever ingredient the body cannot digest. As dogs are not herbivores, they do not have the capability of completely digesting vegetables and fruit, even if you steam and purree them.
