My pregnant dog is restless and not eating. Will pups survive early?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 8 months old | 7 lbs

My Chihuahua Dam is 51 days gestation, for the last 3 days she has been off her food and only eating stuff like mash potato and some chicken (her usual diet is kibble complete) she's pacing and finding it hard to settle. This is her second litter, her first litter came 8 days early. She was mated for this on 02/17/2017. There is no drop in temperature yet. If the pups are born this early will they survive?

12days is very premature for puppies (remember each week is roughly quivalent to a month in human pregnancy) and survival would be doubtful. Bed rest with frequent, small meals would be recommended and monitor closely for any fluid loss or discharge. An ultrasound scan by your vet to identify any problems with the pups or pregnancy would be recommended if she becomes any more uncomfortable.
